The Art of Creating an Authentic Home Interior

In a world that often pushes us toward bigger and better, it can be reassuring to pause and consider the transformation possible in our homes when we make the most of what we already own and love.

Decorating in this way has always been the foundation of the Homes with Soul approach. With a focus on authentic, soulful home interiors, it’s less about following trend, and replacing things unnecessarily, and more about embracing our unique personal style, and decorating our homes, starting with what is already there, gradually layering over time to create a timeless and inspiring home interior.

There are so many changes we can make to our homes that don’t involve a significant renovation or upgrade, and which are only more affordable, but much more achievable - maximising the transformation possible, while minimising unnecessary spend.

By making some changes more affordably, money can often be freed up to invest in the things that will make a bigger difference.

Where we live has a profound impact on our sense of self-worth and wellbeing - so imagine transforming your home into one where you can truly thrive? Feeling content and satisfied with your space, without feeling pressure to save up for the next big renovation or upgrade.

Here are some things you can do make some immediate improvements to your home, and the way you live - without putting your home improvements on pause while you save up for more significant change.

Let Go of the Bigger and Better Mentality

We’ve been conditioned to believe that a new kitchen or a major renovation will finally give us the home of our dreams. But these projects often keep us in a holding pattern, waiting for funds that never quite materialise.

What if, instead of focussing on significant future projects to improve the way we live, we could focus on the small, meaningful changes that significantly impact our lives on a daily basis? These small upgrades can provide immediate satisfaction and create a more personal and comfortable space.

Rediscover What You Own

Exploring the items you already own and love can help clarify your personal style and help you make decorating decisions that align with your style, creating a much more cohesive and inviting home interior. By recognising the potential in what you already have and building on it, you can make significant change without unnecessary expense. This might include rearranging furniture, repurposing items, even decluttering and removing things that no longer serve you, can make a dramatic difference in how your home feels.

Eliminate Daily Irritations

It’s not just the big things that transform our homes; often, it’s the small annoyances that detract from our daily experience. By prioritising the removal of these small irritations, such as squeaky doors or cluttered surfaces, we create a more comfortable, inviting space that promote a sense of calm. These small changes are like self-care for the home, and can significantly boost your enjoyment of home.

Value Your Home and Yourself

Living in a space that feels uninspiring can drain our energy, and keep us stuck - I know because this is exactly how I used to live! As we create homes that support us, our sense of self-worth expands, and our lives open up in unexpected ways. Making small, thoughtful changes can uplift us, even without a big budget. When you invest time and care into your home, it reflects back on how you see yourself. The difference in my sense of self-worth (and the momentum of my life) since beginning my own home transformation journey has been huge. This is why I am so passionate about helping others achieve the same transformation I did.

Consider Quality Secondhand Treasures

Using money wisely can help you achieve significant improvements at home, without huge expense. Embracing quality secondhand finds not only brings authentic charm to your home, but also helps create a beautiful and unique space.

When I grew up, our home was decorated with quality second hand pieces (many pieces passed down from my grandparents and other relatives) and it always looked and felt lovely - its this authenticity that is reflected in my own style. My oak dining table is one of my favourite second hand pieces, and it totally works with my style. In fact many of the pieces I own are second hand.

Quality second hand items often have unique stories and character, adding depth and personality to your home. Considering a mix of old and new is a great way to make the most of your decorating budget - I would rather invest in a quality new couch than spend money on shelving, coffee tables, sideboards that I could find second hand (and really interesting pieces).

Perhaps second hand is not your thing, and that’s totally fine too - the main thing is that you try to invest in quality as this is what will help you to create a more soulful home interior - one that not only looks good, but feels good!
