A Stylish Living Room that Reflects them Both

Case Study

Client Background

Natasha and Graeme, a semi-retired couple, wanted to refresh their living and dining areas without the stress and hassle of doing it themselves. They wanted to create a space that felt comfortable, unfussy and timeless, and reflective of both their personalities.

The Challenge

Natasha and Graeme were concious of the fading curtains, tired carpet, and bland paintwork making their living space feel uninspiring. They wanted a design that felt much more personal. One that emphasised their artwork, including sentimental pieces created by their daughter. As a couple with different tastes, they needed a cohesive design that appealed to both. Having previously managed renovations themselves, they sought a smoother, less stressful process - and wanted the logistics taken care of so they could enjoy seeing it all come together without the stress of managing it themselves.

The Approach

I worked closely with Natasha and Graeme to develop a design that reflected their unique personalities and preferences. The process included:

  1. Balancing Individual Styles: By understanding their individual tastes, I created a cohesive design that blended their preferences while highlighting their sentimental artwork.

  2. Updating Without Overhauling: I suggested updating and reusing many of their existing pieces, such as their lounge suite, occasional chairs, coffee table, and sideboard. This approach kept the transformation cost-effective while maintaining a sense of familiarity.

  3. Strategic Enhancements: To add warmth and sophistication, I recommended bold updates, including fresh paint colours, new carpet, curtains, and a statement oak sideboard that beautifully complemented their favourite painting.

  4. Stress-Free Execution: By collaborating with skilled trades, I managed the logistics of the transformation, ensuring the process was seamless and stress-free for Natasha and Graeme.

The Results

Natasha and Graeme’s space is now a stylish, relaxed haven that reflects both their personalities and highlights their much loved artwork.

  • Comfortable, unfussy, timeless: Updated paint colours, carpet, and curtains transformed the room into one that exudes warmth and sophistication

  • Smart Updates: By reusing and updating existing pieces (lounge suite, occasional chairs, coffee table and sideboard), they achieved a significant refresh for significantly less than it could have cost them. We invested in a beautiful, timeless oak sideboard which will last forever!

  • Seamless Process: The project was completed smoothly using my team of trusted tradespeople, saving them time and energy while delivering a result they love.

  • A Personal Touch: Their updated space celebrates their unique personalities and showcases their treasured artwork in a way that feels cohesive and intentional.

Finding a rug that would tie our room together (and that both Graeme and I would like) was impressive. Even more so, was being able to tie in a couple of paintings which our daughter had created over the years. Selecting the colour for the feature wall was an act of faith (never thought I would have a greenish feature wall!)

I appreciate the thought Nicci put into the final dressing of our space. She managed to add softening touches which Graeme nor I would have thought of adding - but which we both really like. I feel the result of all Nicci’s work is that we have an interesting, relaxed space which reflects 2 very different personalities.
